Living Room, 42" x 60", Enamel on Wood

My classic enamel on wood style depicts three children playing the game "hot lava" in a living room by taking cushions and pillows off the furniture and using them to avoid touching the ground. As they dismantle orderliness to set up the game, they discover that orderliness is just a thin veneer: the rug reveals that it is alive and participates in the game.

This possibility of the most un-anthropomorphized item in the room being exactly what it is not begs a question about representation and just what does it mean to be represented as alive. The living room has many items (furniture, candelabra, cut flowers, the reflection of a petal) that are artistically inspired by life outside of the room, but which is more alive, the cut flowers or their reflection?
